BALTIMORE, MD, May 6, 2021Howard Bank, a commercial-focused community bank serving businesses, professionals and individuals, is proud to announce that Michelle Coates, Senior Vice President and Treasury Sales Manager, was honored by the Maryland Bankers Association (MBA) with its 2021 Champion for Women award.

Now in its seventh year, the Champion for Women award recognizes senior executives who, through personal commitment, continuously promote and inspire women in the workplace to reach their full potential. The recognition is part of the Council of Professional Women in Banking and Finance’s achievement awards program.

With more than 30 years in the Maryland banking industry, Coates is responsible for working directly with Howard Bank’s Commercial Relationship Managers to provide treasury management services to businesses.

She is a founding member of the company’s Women in Leadership committee, which has helped to create an environment that recognizes, cultivates, and utilizes the talent of women to develop leadership qualities in a group setting. In 2020, Coates helped pivot the committee to a remote environment and continued to provide mentorship to help employees move forward in their careers.

“Michelle is an exemplary leader at Howard Bank. She combines, in a totally unique fashion, invaluable expertise and experience with a true commitment to her colleagues and her community. She has continuously helped many young employees learn to navigate the banking industry and as a founder of our Women in Leadership committee she has helped employees elevate their careers,” said Mary Ann Scully, CEO and Chairman at Howard Bank. “Her work goes beyond her role and she has, in addition to her mentoring, been recognized for her support of financial literacy and her work to improve civil and human rights in the region. We congratulate Michelle on this honor and thank her for living our brand day in and day out.”

As a leader at Howard Bank and an active member of the banking and Maryland committees, Coates has been recognized by numerous organizations including the Young Women’s Christian Association of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County for its Tribute to Women & Industry, The Daily Record’s Top 100 Women, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee in Annapolis for its Fannie Lou Hamer award.
