Howard Bank Names Former M&T Bank Executive John Mangan Senior Vice President, Commercial Real Estate Team Lead
BALTIMORE, MD, December 2, 2019 – Howard Bank, a community-focused commercial bank serving businesses, professionals and individuals in the Greater Baltimore area, announced today that John G. Mangan has joined as a senior vice president, commercial real estate team lead.
Mangan has more than 20 years of experience in the banking industry, specializing in commercial real estate and property management. He will use his broad base of experience and extensive connections to help build Howard’s commercial real estate portfolio.
“John is well connected and highly respected in the commercial real estate sector,” said Frank Turner, Howard Bank’s Chief Commercial Banking Officer. “We are thrilled to have him and know he will immediately have a significant impact on our business.”
As the team lead, Mangan will oversee three lenders and two portfolio managers and look to grow the business, Turner said.
Mangan said he likes the fact that Howard is the only commercial bank based in Baltimore where all decisions are made locally. He said, “Howard Bank’s commercial real estate team has deep, local, knowledge of the commercial real estate market and community giving them an edge on the competition.”

Mangan began his career as a corporate attorney in Buffalo, N.Y. and worked in the business from 1987 to 1997. As an attorney, he negotiated the sale of medical practices, automobile dealerships, pharmaceutical distributorships, and technology ventures. He also worked on real estate deals including sale and leaseback transactions.
He jumped to the banking industry in 1998 becoming a regional corporate real estate manager for M&T Bank in Buffalo, N.Y. In 2001, he was promoted to vice president, property management where he was responsible for developing and managing capital budgets for all of M&T Bank’s corporate real estate. He was also responsible for managing and leading 105 employees located throughout the East Coast.
In 2006, Mangan moved with his family to the Baltimore region taking the position of vice president, commercial real estate, where he managed complex real estate credit and deposit relationships with commercial real estate developers. In 2018, Mangan was named administrative vice president, commercial real estate where he was responsible for a $300 million portfolio of complex commercial real estate loans and a $175 million portfolio of low-income housing tax credit investments.
Mangan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in “The Great Books”, from the University of Notre Dame in 1986. In 1989 he earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Buffalo, School of Law and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Buffalo, School of Management in 1999.
