On behalf of everyone at Howard Bank, I’d like to wish you and your family a very happy Thanksgiving.

Although it’s customary to focus on our blessings on this specific day, I hope all our employees and customers know just how thankful and appreciative I am for them all year round. As a quickly growing, community-centered bank with an ever-increasing presence in the central Maryland region, it’s obvious that our success is not due to any one person or initiative–the success is shared and we’re all part of it.

To our incredible Howard Bank employees, I want you to know that I see your hard work and dedication. Thank you.

To our fantastic customers who have helped make Howard Bank what it is today, thank you for trusting us on your financial journey.

This year we proudly celebrate our 10-year anniversary and we are excited to have so many new customers joining us at such a special time in our bank’s history. I assure you that each and every Howard Bank employee will work hard to help you feel right at home during your transition to our bank. We’re thankful for the opportunity to serve our new customers and communities as well as welcome many new staff to the Howard Bank team.

To those of you who have been with us a long time (many since the beginning), know that I count each one of you as part of our recipe for success and together, we’ll see another fantastic year together.

While it’s hard to believe that 2014 is coming to an end, Thanksgiving is a timely reminder that we can’t lose our spirit of gratefulness in the midst of all the busyness.

From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving.

Howard Bank 10th Anniversary Series: Blog 1 - Looking Back...

This fall marks the 10-year anniversary of Howard Bank’s founding, and to celebrate we asked Howard Bank employees to share some memories about their time here. Over the next few weeks, follow along with our 10th Anniversary Blog Series to hear from the people who have been with HB since the very beginning.

This week, we hear from...

Q: Describe your first day at Howard Bank. What was it like?

RS: The feeling I had and the word that I used over and over again on August 9, 2004 was "surreal.” The excitement and energy was palpable when the first accounts were opened. When a customer actually came into my office to talk about a potential deal I knew it was real. We stayed late that day. I don't think any of us wanted the feeling to end.

YC: My first time arriving at Corporate was for my interview, which took place at an 8-foot plastic table with folding chairs in the Board Room. George Coffman was the first person that I met… He made a lasting impression! My first day on the job was two weeks later and I have to say I felt like a kid in a candy store. We worked very long hours – but it never felt tiresome!

Q: When did you get the feeling that this risk was going to pay off, that it was going to work?

RS: I never thought it was not going to work or pay off. We had an incredible team; I truly felt and feel today that failure was not an option.

Q: What’s one of your favorite memories from Howard Bank’s community service activities?

YC: I think my favorite event was the first year we sponsored children from the Angel Tree at Christmas. We were able to sponsor 10 children and we only had a small number of employees at the time. It made me proud to be a part of such a caring team.

RS: When we opened the bank we only had a team of 15 to cover community events. People thought we had a team of 50!

Q: What’s the most personally rewarding aspect of being on the Howard Bank team?

YC: As the HR Manager, the most rewarding aspect of being on this team is being able to provide our staff with opportunities for growth and development! It has been wonderful watching my teammates grow and develop over the last 10 years. I just love it when people advance!!

Q: Is there a client success story that really stands out?

RS: We helped so many customers over the years. Some we helped grow and some we helped survive through the financial crisis of 2008. It is hard to pick just one. I had a customer whose dream was to grow his unique retail business from a single store to many stores. He now has many stores and is continuing to grow his business, helping both himself and our community as well.

Q: What most excites you about the future of Howard Bank?

YC: I am excited about the places we will go and the communities in which we will make a difference. I love that about us – we make a difference – and we are focused on doing so.

RS: I am excited about the continued growth of the bank.  The growth and changing environment will provide opportunities for me, for my team and for the communities we serve.

Stay tuned for our next post in our 10th Anniversary series, featuring two more Howard Bank employees who’ve “seen it all.”

Howard Bank: 10 Years Strong...

Howard Bank

MaryAnn ScullyIt was about ten years ago to the day that Howard Bank first opened its doors at the Snowden River and Hickory Ridge branches here in Columbia.

I clearly remember that day (August 9th to be exact). After a full year of preparation- raising capital, talking to regulators, signing office leases and hiring colleagues , to see customers enter our branches, drive up to our ATM's, and to discuss with clients when we could book their new loans was the type of nail biting yet exhilarating moment that all business founders understand. I look back on it with awe and pride having seen what Howard Bank has become today.

This August is a special moment in our history. A decade ago we set out on the journey to become the kind of local bank that was truly different and was built around an unshakeable commitment to connecting with our community in a very new and different way. Now, we have the good pleasure of looking back and reflecting on where we’ve come from and where we’re going. It’s an exciting journey and we’re so thankful to the extraordinary employees and partners that have invested so much in making Howard Bank a bank that our clients believe in.

I want to take advantage of this moment in time to say a very sincere thank you to our clients. Without you Howard Bank wouldn’t be where we are today.

In the coming months we’ll be telling some of the stories of our history, especially the stories of our seasoned employees and executives who have been a part of this journey since the beginning. Look for that content soon and please join with us in celebrating our shared success this fall.
