Howard Bank Presents Scholarship to Anne Arundel Medical Center

Howard Bank has made a donation of $24,000 to Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) to fund the AAMC Physician Leadership Academy Scholarship Program.  This scholarship will support AAMC sending three physicians a year to the Harvard School of Public Health for a program entitled Leadership Strategies for Evolving Health Care Executives.

“Great health care requires great leadership, and great leadership requires a commitment to learning with and from other leaders, ” said Mary Ann Scully, president and CEO of Howard Bank. “This program will not only benefit the physicians chosen to participate, but it will have an impact on the long term  health of our community.  Howard Bank is proud to provide that opportunity to physicians working and living in our community .”

Focusing on health management systems, Harvard’s five-day program provides skill building in the critical areas of leadership and management development. Taught in an interactive classroom setting, the curriculum enables emerging physician leaders to respond proactively to a rapidly changing health care environment.

“Physician leaders cannot be effective without true leadership training and skills,” said Mitchell Schwartz, MD, chief medical officer, Anne Arundel Medical Center.  “As the complexities of the healthcare system and delivery of services grow, physicians are increasingly tasked with organizational management to sustain their practices for the long term. AAMC is grateful to have a generous partner in Howard Bank, while the entire community is fortunate for their commitment.”

The AAMC Physician Leadership Academy (PLA) brings together the leaders of clinical programs and private practices throughout the medical community to develop the skills and techniques necessary to help lead the health system into a new era of healthcare.  Currently, the 45 members of the PLA participate in sessions covering topics such as Crucial Conversations, Leading Change: Implementing Improvements in the Health Care Organization, Growing Great Employees and Breakthrough Negotiations.  With the funds provided by Howard Bank, the PLA can now continue to grow outside of these sessions, gaining access to more advanced leadership and training.

In December, members of AAMC’s Physician Leadership Academy will submit applications to be reviewed by a judging committee of executives from both Anne Arundel Health System and Howard Bank.  The three selected physicians will be announced in January.  After attending the program in April, the participants will present the curriculum to their colleagues in the Physician Leadership Academy.
