Howard Bank, the county’s only locally owned and locally managed community bank, has been recognized with a 2006 Economic Development Achievement Award, presented by the Howard County Economic Development Authority at its Annual Meeting on Sept. 21. It is the first bank to win an Achievement Award from HCEDA.

Howard Bank was cited for making a significant impact on Howard County during the bank’s two-year history.  The bank’s rapid growth in assets, branch locations and additional employment base within the county were complemented by active involvement and leadership in many community service activities.

Howard Bank executives serve on boards and committees at the Howard County Chamber of Commerce, Jim Rouse Entrepreneurial Fund, Leadership Howard County, Howard County Tourism Council, Howard County Family YMCA, The Arc of Howard County, and the Columbia Festival of the Arts.

Richard W. Story, CEO of the Economic Development Authority, noted that, in addition to providing financial support for local institutions, Scully personally currently sits on the boards of the United Way of Central Maryland, The Columbia Foundation, The Horizon Foundation and the Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County. She is the co-chair of the Capital Campaign for Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center. “She is the quintessential banker,” said Richard W. Story, CEO of the Economic Development Authority.  Noting her 30-year career and work in “building a bank” in Howard County, Story also praised Scully for “making time to give back to her community and leading the bank in giving back.”

In addition to the EDA Achievement Award, Howard Bank was also named one of SmartCEO magazine’s “Future 50”companies, which were cited for entrepreneurship and high revenue growth.  The award will be presented at a ceremony in December.

Howard Bank has three branches in Howard County – in the Hickory Ridge Village Center in Columbia, on Snowden River Parkway in Ellicott City, and in the new Maple Lawn Farms development in Fulton.  In early 2007, Howard Bank it will open its first branch on Route 40 near Centennial Lane.
